چکیده

LINGUAL INFARCTION is an atypical manifestation of temporal arteritis, with fewer than 30 cases reported since 1966.1 Temporal arteritis causes inflammation of mediumto large-sized arteries, particularly branches of the carotid artery. It occurs predominantly in white women over 55 years old and is associated with polymyalgia rheumatica. The two conditions are considered to be part of the spectrum of the one vasculitic disorder.2 Diagnosis of temporal arteritis is a clinical challenge given that atypical presentations occur in up to 40% of patients. Furthermore, there are differing opinions about treatment. Its incidence in the over-50 age group is 22.2 per 100 000.3 Given the ageing population in Australia, the spectrum of presentation of temporal arteritis warrants renewed discussion and awareness. Tongue Necrosis as an Initial Manifestation of Giant Cell Arteritis: Case Report and Review of the Literature

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a systemic vasculitis of medium and large arteries that mainly affects the external carotid artery. It is a diagnosis of the elderly that typically presents as low-grade fever, temporal tenderness, claudication of the jaw, and in some patients vision loss. In cases where GCA presents with atypical manifestations, the diagnosis may be more difficult, causing a delay...

Giant Cell ( Temporal ) Arteritis with Lingual Necrosis A Case Report

Giant cell (temporal) arteritis (GCA) is a granulomatous inflammatory disease affecting particularly large and medium sized arteries. Most cases occurred in the Scandinavian elderly greater than 50-year-old. The American Africans and the oriental have a much lower incidence of GCA. Headache, fever and anemia are common symptoms. Blindness is the most dreaded complication. Reported cases of defi...

Temporal arteritis with normal erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is used to differentiate temporal arteritis from other forms of headache in the elderly. Though temporal arteritis can occur with a normal ESR, this is not generally appreciated in primary care. The case reported here is a 74-year-old woman with biopsy-proven temporal arteritis; her ESR was 22 mm/hr. Of note, her hematocrit was more than 40 percent, a co...

Granulomatous lipophagic panniculitis and temporal arteritis in a patient with cryptogenic chronic active hepatitis.

An elderly woman receiving long term treatment with prednisone and azathioprine for cryptogenic chronic active hepatitis developed granulomatous lipophagic panniculitis and temporal arteritis. The lymphoplasmahistiocytic inflammatory reaction pattern is common to this patient's three diseases. It is suggested that an aberration of the defence mechanisms, immunological or otherwise, is responsib...
